Safeway Employee Intranet Redesign

Background

For many, Safeway is synonymous with the local
grocery store. It is one of North America’s largest
food retailers with 197,000 employees working
at more than 1740 stores in the United States.
The most efficient way for such a large company
to keep in meaningful contact with all its
employees is through the company Intranet.

Challenge

Safeway found that use of the Intranet was
declining rapidly and the large amount of
information on the site hindered employee
engagement – the very reason it was created
in the first place. Squillante Studios was
contacted by Safeway first, to discover why
employees were uninterested in the site and
second to make and implement design recomm-
endations on how to increase user involvement.

Solution

Squillante Studios began with a fact finding phase
that involved reviewing existing content and
monitoring current user feedback. After thorough
research, Squillante Studios recommended using
interactive stories and discovery pages throughout
the site to increase employee involvement. Squillante
Studios then subsequently redesigned the site and
implemented these recommendations.

Results

Usage of the Safeway Intranet increased dramatically
post launch. This was measured in site visits, log-
ons, click-throughs and duration of visit. Safeway
was able to keep employees informed and motivated
during the economic downturn which was deemed
important in maintaining company morale.
